I am falling in love with family history.... It's addicting! - 06/02/14

Tassie Times

I can't believe it's been another week! Time seriously goes by so fast!

Monday after we emailed we went with our district to a place called Marakoopa Caves. :) It was so cool. Absolutely beautiful caves underground. It was amazing. And there is a part of the cave that is filled with all of these glow worms. It was so cool. Heavenly Father sure does have some beautiful creations here in Tasmania. After that we hiked up Alum Cliffs (the cliffs sister R and I went to before) so that everyone could see. They didn't really know exactly what to expect but they all loved it, especially Elder P. When he got to the top he said, "Oh my gosh. This is amazing. It's a good thing this isn't in my area or else I would never get any missionary work done." Haha it was pretty funny. He didn't want to ever leave. Monday night after p-day was finished we had a good lesson with S. We taught her the apostasy using a picture that the APs showed us at our Zone Conference and it worked really well. It really helps people to understand the need for a restoration and the importance of the priesthood.

Tuesday morning we had our last district meeting of the transfer. We had a really good training on obedience using the story of Samson in Judges. Read it and notice how his small actions of disobedience ultimately caused his downfall. It was really interesting. After our meeting we all had lunch together. Sister R and I brought the American Pancake mix from our flat and everyone else brought toppings. It was really fun. That afternoon we went to our regular Tuesday appointments. We had a good lesson with Nana Trixie and a good lesson with the less active family. That night we had dinner with a part member couple in the ward. She is a member and he is not. We showed them the Mormon message Earthly Father Heavenly Father and the spirit was so strong. I hope we can get them both coming to church soon!

Last district meeting of this transfer!
Wednesday afternoon we had lunch with our new ward mission leader. He is so wonderful. He really has a vision for the work and wants to be really involved. He is what every ward needs. A good ward mission leader helps the work so much. After that we stopped in to see C and her kids. We keep just having to stop by when we are in their area because they are so busy that we can't really set appointments. They were getting ready to leave so we didn't have time for a lesson but it was good to be able to contact them. That evening we went to G and L's for dinner. They are investigators that I told you about my first week here. We haven't been able to have a lesson with them for a long time. But a member works with him and they talk about church things almost every day. We had a really good lesson Wednesday night and he had a few light bulb moments which was really good. And she is getting more involved with the lessons which is awesome.

Thursday morning we were at the family history center and I've been able to connect a few more dots in my family tree. I am falling in love with family history. For years I have felt guilty during general conference when they talked about family history because I wasn't doing it. But now I love it and I wish I could do more of it. It's addicting. I've been studying the Doctrine and Covenants this week and in section 127 I noticed that as Joseph Smith is giving instructions he doesn't say baptisms for the dead but he says baptisms for your dead. Also this morning I was reading Elder Cook's most recent general conference talk about family history. He also talks about the obligation we have to not only do temple work but to do temple work for our own ancestors. I don't want to be a preachy, soap-box missionary but I'm going to be a little bit. If you're not doing family history work, do it. Go to a family history library, watch the online tutorials and get involved in it. I can promise you that it will bring you so much joy.

Thursday afternoon we were going to do some tracting. The second house that we knocked on a woman said from behind the door, "who is it?" we said it's the missionaries! And she opened right up. Turns out that she has been taught before and knows a lot of the members well. She invited us right in. She's from Nigeria. We were able to have a really good lesson with her and we have a return appointment for this week which I'm really excited about!

Friday morning we got up at 6:00 to go walking with S. She really needs to get out of her house more so we are going to walk with her about once a week in the morning. We had a flat inspection by the real estate people that day so we got the flat nice and clean. When the lady got there, she came in for all of about 2 minutes and said that it looked good and then she left. I didn't know that qualifies as an inspection but whatever. That afternoon we did some more tracting with a little bit of success. Funny thing though-- we talked to one guy who was wearing a Yankees hat and a Dodgers shirt. And he didn't even know what either of them were. Haha.

Saturday morning we had another lesson with S. She had her two little kids there so it was a bit crazy but we were able to read a chapter of the Book of Mormon with her. Sister R and I both had terrible colds on Saturday so we were at the flat for a bit of the afternoon trying to get feeling better. Good news was by yesterday morning I felt pretty much as good as new.

Sunday was really good. G and L both came to church for the full three hours. I love Fast Sundays and hearing people bear their testimonies. I wasn't at all planning on bearing my testimony but when the spirit prompts, you have to follow. I am so grateful for the many many opportunities I have as a missionary to bear my testimony and share the things that I know with others. As I share simple truths that I have known my whole life, my own testimony is deepened and strengthened.

Another thing, we got transfer news on Saturday night. I didn't know at all what to expect. They called and told us that Sister R would be leaving and I would be staying. AND that I will be training again. I was shocked. I didn't expect at all to train again. But I'm looking forward to it. In a way, training is like a fresh slate. You get a brand new missionary who knows nothing about you and I get to show her exactly what kind of missionary I am and want to be. I am really looking forward to digging in with my golden, being exactly obedient and working hard.

Sister R flies out tonight and my golden won't get here until Wednesday night so I will be spending the next few days with the Launceston sisters which I'm looking forward to.

I love being a missionary. I want to use every second of the time that I have left to its fullest. Time is going way too fast. I love it here. I never want it to end.

Even though they scare me, Australia has the most beautiful birds!

Love you all heaps!

Man, I wish I knew more about family history. - 05/26/14

Tassie Times

Well, this week we had such good week!!

On Monday we went with one of the most awesome members in the ward into Launceston. We wanted to go grocery shopping there because the cheaper store is there and we only have the more expensive one in Deloraine. We saved so much money being able to go there which was awesome. And you should have seen our cart—it was full of nothing but healthy food. Seriously, everything was so healthy. The most unhealthy thing there was bread. Ha, so that was good. We also went to one of my favourite clothes shops in Australia—Rivers. I got a whole new really cute outfit. I love it so much that I decided that I would wear it to Zone Conference and then put it away and save it to be my coming home outfit. :)

Monday night we had dinner with the Stake President and their family. They are such wonderful people who really live the gospel. I love them. After that we had a lesson with S. She has some real health challenges. As we were with her, I felt so much love for her. We are trying to help her to feel the spirit and understand that she is a daughter of God.

Tuesday morning we were helping in the family history center. Sometimes I feel so bad because I don't know how to answer people's questions. But I'm slowly learning and figuring things out. After family history a YSA girl came to pick us up. She was chauffeuring us around for the day because our car was getting repaired/serviced. We spent a bit of the afternoon doing some tracting. Then we saw cute Nana Trixie and had a lesson about the spirit and the light of Christ. Then we went to go teach the boy who we are helping to get ready for baptism. They had forgotten about the appointment and the dad had taken the kids somewhere but the mum was home and let us in. She was having a really rough day and needed someone to just listen so it was good to be able to do that for her. Tuesday night we had dinner with a cute older couple in the ward. Haha G is 88 and is hilarious. I love older people, they're so cute. :)

Wednesday was such a good day! We went on exchanges with the Sister Training Leaders, Sister R and Sister S. I got to be with Sister Roberts the whole day which was really great. :) We did a fair bit of tracting in the morning and we met some good potentials. Then we had a lesson with S. She was having a really bad day and when we got to her house. We sang some hymns which seemed to really help her mood. I feel like I've been taking the role of a listener a lot lately which has been good. I know that the Savior would do the same thing--just sit and listen to people. After our lesson with S we saw a cute Filipino lady in the ward. Then we visited C and her kids and had a quick lesson about prophets. Then we went to a house for dinner.

Thursday morning the Zone Leaders came with us to S's house to give her a blessing and also to bless her home. It was perfect. Sarah felt the Spirit so strongly. After they left we were able to read the Book of Mormon with her and the spirit was so strong.

Thursday afternoon we went to go visit a less active young mum in the ward. They live kind of up on the hill. It poured rain while we were there and got really muddy. When we went to leave, our car got stuck in the mud... It's a good thing that her fiancé was there to get us unstuck. Haha, cause if not, I have no idea what we would have done. That night we had the first ward council with the new bishop which was really good. The ward here is so great. They are going to give S home and visiting teachers even though she's not a member yet so that she has some support.

Friday we spent most of the day at Zone Conference. Have I mentioned before how much I love meetings? Well, I love them. The Zone Conference was so good. I felt so inspired and received a lot of revelation. I'll share a few of my favorite thoughts:
  • A friend is someone who accepts you the way you are but doesn't leave you the way they found you.
  • The war we fought in heaven is continued here on earth--President Maxwell is commander who knows what to do and how to do it. He knows how to keep us safe and how to win the war.
  • Ether 3:1-6. Our investigators can be likened unto the stones. We need to prepare them so that they can be touched by the Lord.
  • Regret test-- if I choose to do this now, will I regret it tomorrow, next week, next year, etc.?
  • Help your companion to be obedient. Does it really matter if they are annoyed? Will they still be annoyed in the Celestial Kingdom?
  • The adversary is doing everything in his power to bind us under the name of freedom.
  • Become a "YES MAN." Help and serve the members at any opportunity.
  • Own doorsteps. Smile. Remember that everyone you meet is 10% less comfortable than you are.
  • "Difficulties are just things to overcome after all." -Ernest Shackleton. (look him up. He has an incredible story. I don't have time to tell it now.)
  • "The Lord you represent and serve knows you can do this and He will help you."-Elder Bednar
  • If we are quiet and peaceful, we will realize the Lord has been walking in our areas.
I could go on and on. It was such a good conference. I am so grateful for the wonderful leaders we have in this mission, especially President and Sister Maxwell. President Maxwell gives me the best advice and counsel. It was exactly what I needed. Heavenly Father knows me and is so aware of me.

Saturday was a busy day full of work and a bunch of tracting with which we had some good success. We met an aboriginal man who is about 70. We invited him to come to church. He was keen to come so we arranged a ride for him. We were actually quite surprised when he actually came to church. Haha he was wearing a t-shirt that said, "Hot as Hell" which I found so funny. It took everything in me not to crack up laughing. He stayed for almost all of church which was good. Haha but we did find out that he has been to church twice before and he doesn't remember it at all. And that he's an alcoholic. So we'll see how things go trying to teach him.

We've been really trying to apply the things we learned at zone conference, especially about being able to help the members at any opportunity. We've had two really good opportunities so far. Friday night our appointment fell through so we stopped by the chapel to make copies of fliers for an upcoming ward activity. A family in the ward was just getting there to clean the chapel and we were able to help them clean the whole building. As we were leaving, they gave us a really solid referral. We had another opportunity last night. We went to a part-member family's house for dinner. We got there and I picked up their little teacup-poodle who is so cute and I love so much. They said that the dog really needed a bath so we offered to do it and gave the dog a bath and then blow dried her. And we got another really solid referral from them which was really good!

We had such a good week. We taught 27 lessons which is more than I think I've ever had in Australia. We are finding more people to build our teaching pool. Things are going really well. I love being a missionary so much!

I love you all heaps and heaps!

Love,

Sister Baker xxx

Sisters Conference - I love the Sisters in this mission so much! - 05/19/14

Tassie Times

Where do I even start? I feel like I have so much to tell you since I didn't get to email last week.

I'll start with two weeks ago…

Hike to top of Allum Cliffs
Monday we had such a fun p-day! Some wonderful members in the ward paid for us to go and do some really fun things! First we went to the honey farm which was really cool. They have like 20 different honeys that you can taste and honey products galore. The best part is the honey ice cream. It was so delicious! After that we went on a hike up to a place called Allum Cliffs. The view was incredible. Tasmania is so beautiful! The view actually reminded me a lot of Mesa Falls, except without the falls part. You'll have to Google it so you can see what it looks like. After that we went to Trowunna Wildlife Park--my favourite part of the day! We got to see lots of Tassie Devils and then we got to be with tons of Wallabies that just eat right out of your hand! We also saw kookaburras, wombats, and echidnas. It was awesome. A real Aussie experience! Before we did all those things, we went grocery shopping. We didn't think we bought anything cold so we just left it all in the car all day. Well, later we remembered that we bought chicken... Oops! Oh well.

Tuesday we had district meeting. After district meeting we had the Launceston Sisters over for lunch. I made Bajio chicken in the crockpot and it was really good! That afternoon we visited several less actives. First we saw a lady who I have affectionately started calling Nana Trixie. She's like 85 years old and is so cute! She was 80 when she got baptized! You're never too old to accept the gospel! After that we saw the family whose son we are teaching to help him get ready for baptism. Then we had dinner with a sweet older lady in the ward. She's so cute. She's leaving soon to go visit her daughter in America and she is starting to get stressed but she is so excited to see her grandchildren. :)

Wednesday morning we did some tracting. While we were tracting we met a man outside his house. He started asking some really good questions and I really felt like we needed to tell him about the restoration. I started teaching and realized that I got through every point of the restoration in about 3 minutes. I remember in the MTC when they told us to do it in five minutes and I thought it was impossible--it's times like this that make me realize how much I've grown as a missionary! Wednesday afternoon we had plans to go and visit a less-active family on the list who we didn't know. We put their address into the GPS and started driving. Well, the GPS took us on a wild goose chase and we were driving like up a mountain. We ended up driving all the way to the great lakes that are like in the middle of Tasmania. I felt so stupid. You'd think that we would figure out that we were going the wrong way. But our area is huge and I didn't really think anything of it. When we realized how lost we were and how far we'd gone in the wrong direction, it was one of those moments that you can either cry or you can laugh. Well, I started laughing. Like crying, laughing. I felt so stupid and ridiculous. But, on the bright side, we now know that is not where they live, AND we got to see a beautiful view at the top of a mountain.  Wednesday night we had dinner with C and her children. They are the cutest family ever. We taught them about Heavenly Father and about prayer. We committed them to have family prayer every day. Before we left we knelt down to have a prayer and the 11 year old daughter said the prayer. As soon as she finished the 9 year old son asked if he could pray too. Well, absolutely! It was so cute. Unfortunately they are a super busy family so it's hard to be able to teach them but they have a lot of potential!

Thursday afternoon we had a lesson with a man in his 70s who is quite opinionated and we were having a hard time bringing the spirit into the lesson. But then we sang A Child's Prayer and the spirit came. I don't know how much he'll progress but we'll see this week when we teach him again.

Saturday morning we saw a part member family. The dad is less-active and the mum is not a member. But the dad's entire family are members of the ward and are active, his dad is the new bishop. We're really hoping to be able to build a good relationship with them and help him come back to church and hopefully we can build a good relationship with his wife too.

Sunday at church we got a new bishop which was crazy! But I think it is going to be so good. It was SO good to be able to Skype you guys on Sunday! I still can't believe how much McKay's voice has changed and how tall he is! CRAZY! Sunday night we had dinner with the new bishop and all his kids and grandkids. We shared a message about the stripling warriors and how their mother's taught them and then we had everyone share something that their mother had taught them. Ha, I realized that is a very Twitchell thing to do. Sunday night we had to get all packed to go to Melbourne.

And now for this past week…

Monday morning we left at 7:00 am to go to the Launceston airport. We met the Launceston sisters there and the four of us flew to Melbourne together. When we got to Melbourne we had to wait there for about an hour and a half for the sisters from Hobart to fly in. We were all starving so we ate at one of my favourite restaurants-- Nandos! It's so yummy. After the Hobart sisters got in, a senior couple picked us up in a mission van and took us to the office. We spent the p-day with the other sisters. We made a bunch of blankets for a women's shelter and played a bunch of games together and then we had a yummy soup and salad dinner. After that we went down to Narre Warren (Sister H and Sister R’s area). All of the Tassie sisters stayed there so there were 8 of us. We all split up and visited people in their area. I went with Sister H to teach a 17 year old boy. I love teaching with Sister H. Love her. Another funny story… that night I decided I'd shower at night because there were 8 of us and there would only be limited time in the morning. Well, it turns out that they have absolutely no hot water at night. Haha it was the coldest shower I have ever taken. I couldn't even breathe. We all just slept on the floor that night in blankets and sleeping bags which was fun.

Tuesday morning we got up and got ready then headed to Sister's conference. It was so good! I love the Sisters in this mission so much. It was so good to be with all of them and we had the best trainings! A few thoughts that I loved from the day:
  • When you forget yourself, God will send people to remember you for you.
  • Let your companion shine where she shines--even if you can shine there too. Let her shine.
  • Love is the greatest motivator.
  • Is this time to fill the tank or is it the time to lose ourselves and go to work? (taking time to take care of yourself)
  • At the end of your mission be able to count the memories and not the missed opportunities.
  • The difference between salvation and exaltation is a family.
  • Our purpose doesn't change much after the mission--eternal family needs to be our purpose.
  • When you have decisions to make, remember that you are affecting generations to come.
  • Use this opportunity as a missionary to prepare to be a mother who knows.
I could go on and on. It was so good. It was also so good to see Sister B. She is doing so well!
Sisters Conference!
Me and Sister R
All my daughters and granddaughters!
My MTC group

I love Sister S!
After Sisters conference the Assistants were in the office. Feeling the stress of needing to decide things for school and stuff after the mission, I asked them to give me a blessing. The blessing was perfect. And it was a perfect lead in to going to the temple that night. I am so grateful that we got to go to the temple. I love the temple. I was really pondering and asking Heavenly Father about where I'm supposed to go to school, what I'm supposed to study, etc. The very clear answer came. I'm so grateful for answers from my Heavenly Father and for the knowledge that I gained. Besides schooling, I've felt so strongly throughout my whole mission that this is preparing me so much to be a wife and a mother.

Tuesday night we stayed at the mission home which is always a blessing. I love President and Sister Maxwell so much! Wednesday morning we were all just sitting and doing our personal study when President came in and asked if he could talk to me. We went in to his office and he said that the APs had told him that I had asked for a blessing and he was just checking to see what he could do to help me. I am so grateful for President and the time he takes to focus on the one.

Wednesday afternoon we flew back to Launceston and got in about 3:00. We had dinner with a wonderful family that night and then we met with our ward mission leader.

A huge miracle happened on Thursday! We were at the family history center and I had a bit of time to work on my own lines. I was working on that Lydia Twitchell (the one I told you about on Skype)... Well guess what! I was able to find her husband and her 10 children! And now I have it reserved to do all of their temple work! We can all go to the temple together after I am home and do the work for this entire family! I am so happy! I thought that too much of my family history work was done and that I would never be able to find names to take to the temple but I found 12!!

Friday we had a really good lesson with S. S was taught previously by the sisters but she has been but she's back. She has some health challenges but she is awesome! We were able to set a baptismal date with her for the 14th of June!
Gotta love farm towns!

Sunday was really good. Church was wonderful. I am so grateful to be able to take the sacrament every week. And we had 3 investigators there which was awesome! After church we did some tracting and we met a beautiful woman named H who we can go back and see this week. We also had some pretty interesting conversations with a Jehovah Witness lady.

I feel like so much has happened. I am so grateful to be a missionary. I love it, love it, love it! I love you all!

Love you heaps!

Setting Goals is an Act of Faith - 05/05/14

Tassie Times

Where does the time go? We had a good week this week!

On Monday we got our emails and shopping done and then we spent the rest of the day cleaning the flat and writing letters and stuff. We had dinner that night with the stake president and his family. They have three little girls who are absolutely gorgeous!

Tuesday morning we had district meeting. After that we went tracting for a while. Then we had a lesson with a less-active family. Their son recently turned 8 but because they haven't been overly active lately they don't feel like he can be baptized until he is taught all of the lessons. So we are teaching him every week. Seems like all I do is teach 8-9 year old little boys. But I love it! After that we had dinner with the sweetest older couple in the ward. They are both so sweet. I don't remember how but somehow we got talking about L and her family and how they want to move down to Tasmania so badly. As soon as I said that he told me that the ward, especially the bishopric, has been praying for move-ins to the ward. He asked me to get in contact with L and see if she would let me give them her contact details so that they can communicate with her and help her to get her family moved down here. As he told me this, it felt so right. I felt like maybe that is the reason I needed to come to Tasmania. So that night I got permission from the assistants to call L. She was so surprised when I called. Oh I just love her. As soon as I started explaining the conversation that took place at dinner, she just started to cry. She told me she had been praying just that day that somehow she would have some help getting to Tassie because she didn't feel like she could do it on her own. I am so happy about this. She would love it here and their family would fit so well. And the members here would take good care of them.

Wednesday we had a lesson with an investigator. Basically the lesson was all over the place. He hardly listened to what we said and just kept talking about the things that other religions believe and stuff. We left and decided that we needed to have one more lesson with him and really be bold with him.

Thursday morning we were in the family history center again. I don't know if it's just because it's a small town and word gets around easier or what but the family history center is so busy! It's awesome! After that we had a lesson with an older couple. It was another train wreck. She has pretty bad dementia and she can't remember anything for more than about five minutes. So that makes teaching her pretty much impossible. He is Bahai (not sure how to spell it). I don't know much about it but it seems like a pretty different religion. He basically just argued the whole time. So needless to say, we won't be going back there.
Found this Mapleine in the flat... you better believe I made pancakes with maple syrup!

Me and Sister R after the drive to Hobart
By about 4:30 we had to run home and hurry and pack an overnight bag and then we hopped in the car to drive down to Hobart to stay the night before our Zone Conference with Elder Hamula. It takes about 2.5 hours to drive down to Hobart. Sister R and I and the Launceston Sisters stayed with a member down there. We had to get up really early on Friday morning and leave by 6:45 am to go to our conference with Elder Hamula. Ah, it was so good. He and Sister Hamula both spoke to us and it was so uplifting. I feel like I received so much revelation. Elder Hamula talked a lot about how the Book of Mormon provides a witness and how it increases faith. He also talked a lot about planning and goal setting. He said that our mission needs to improve on this to lift the mission. The things he said really impressed me and I have such a desire to improve. The thing that he said that I loved the most is that whether or not we reach our goals is not what is important--that setting goals is an act of faith and we are successful if we do everything in our power to achieve that goal, not that we actually achieve it. My mind flashed right back to last November-December when I was serving with Sister Stevenson. Every companionship was supposed to baptize before Christmas and Sister Stevenson and I were doing all in our power to be able to do so. And yet it didn't happen. I was devastated and felt like I had failed. But we didn't. We did all in our power and we worked hard. The Lord doesn't judge results, he judges efforts. Satan is the one who wants me to feel like a failure.

After the conference ended, the whole zone went to Pizza Hut for the buffet lunch which was really fun! On the drive down to Hobart our brakes had been acting a little funny so we had to get them checked before we could drive back. We ended up not being able to head back until 4:45. Then it was raining like crazy and everyone was driving slower because of it so it took us ages to finally get back. I have never wanted to be out of a car so badly in my life.

Saturday morning the ward had a Super Service Saturday where everyone goes and deep cleans the chapel which was really good. I love the members here. They are great!
Me and Sister R at the Super Service Saturday!

Church on Sunday was really good! We had 4 investigators come to sacrament meeting which was awesome! After church we grabbed one of the young women and did some tracting and then took her to a lesson with M. We really took control of this lesson and were bold and it went a lot better. We invited him to be baptized on May 24th and he accepted, conditional on his finding that the Book of Mormon was true. I was actually really surprised that he accepted. Unfortunately we got a message from him later last night and he dropped us. Bummer huh?

Overall it's been a good week! We are doing a lot of finding trying to build a solid teaching pool! Hopefully we find some golden investigators soon!

I love y'all heaps and heaps!

Love,
Sister Baker xxx

P.S. The ward boundaries are pretty big. We try to spread out but we've mostly been in Deloraine and Westbury thus far.

I have a feeling that some really good things are going to happen here in Tassie! - 04/28/14

Tassie Times

What a week it has been! I feel like it all went in the blink of an eye!

Saying goodbye to people from Mooroolbark
Monday after we emailed we were at the flat most of the day and I was trying to pack. I'm so grateful I was able to bring both of my big suitcases to Tas or I never would have fit everything. I have accumulated a lot of stuff during the mission and I ended up still having to leave some things on the mainland (mostly souvenir type things.) Monday night we went to see the M family so I could say goodbye to them. J was especially sad for me to have to leave. I am so so grateful for the opportunity I have had to know that family and to see them come into the gospel. After that we went to Bishop's to have him sign J's baptism record. He just kept saying how much he had appreciated having me serve in the ward. It made me feel really good.

Saying goodbye to Sister B

The Mooroolbark Sisters and Elders

Tuesday morning I finished packing up all of my things and then we went to the mission office for transfer meeting. The meeting was really good. President Maxwell talked a lot about obedience. He talked about how as missionaries we are always on stage, that there are always people noticing us, watching our every action. He also talked about Alma 39:11 and how it applies to missionaries: if people see missionaries being disobedient, then they will not believe our words when we teach. I am so grateful that I don't struggle with obedience. I WANT to be obedient. I know how much I need Heavenly Father's help and that makes me want to be obedient. I am so grateful for that. I was assigned to serve in Deloraine, Tasmania, with Sister R as my companion.

There were four of us missionaries who were assigned to fly down to Tassie, 2 Elders and 2 sisters. One of the Elders was flying to Hobart and the rest of us were flying to Launceston. Our flights didn't leave until 8 pm so we had a lot of waiting around at the office all day. One of the senior couples drove us out to the airport around 5:00 and we got there around 6:30. Airport security is so relaxed in Australia! We got through in no time at all so we had to wait for our flight about an hour. The flight to Tassie is only an hour and five minutes. It was so short. Sister S and I were sitting together on the flight. There was a guy sitting across the aisle from us who is from Deloraine. We started talking to him. He is part of the Plymouth Brethren church. I had never heard of it but he told us a bit about it. He also asked some questions about our church and we were able to share with him and we gave him a Book of Mormon.

My traveling companions to Tassie
Stepping straight off onto the runway!
When we arrived in Launceston, it was about 9:15 pm. As we walked to the front of the plane to get off I was surprised to see that we just walked down a set of stairs that they had pushed up to the plane and stepped straight off onto the runway. It was awesome! I felt like it was something from the movies or something. Sister R and Sister S were there to pick up me, S Stoker and Elder L. Five people, three people's luggage, and one little Toyota Corolla. Let's just say that we were playing tetris for a while and it was a miracle that everything fit! We drove ten minutes to the Launceston sister's flat and dropped them off and then had about a 45 minute drive to Deloraine where Elder L's companion met us. Sister R and I got to our flat about 11:15 pm. We unpacked some things for about 30 minutes and then finally got to bed around midnight.

Our flat is super nice because it used to be a Senior Missionary
Couple's flat.

Our kitchen even has a crockpot!

I love Sister R. She is from Adelaide. She is fun and quirky and she really wants to work hard and see miracles. Deloraine is the smallest little place. It reminds me of a little Idaho farm town or something. The hills are beautiful and there are "mountains." There is only one grocery store in the whole place and everyone kind of knows everyone. I love it. The ward is really small, it's more like a branch. But the members are wonderful and I have a feeling that some really good things are going to happen here!

Beautiful Tasmania!

The Meander river flows through the town of Deloraine.

Wednesday night we had dinner with some investigators. They are really awesome. They have been Christodelphians for a long time. L is not overly interested, but G is. We taught G the plan of salvation and he really loved it! And L was definitely listening as she was acting busy making dinner. I have a feeling that we can help her to gain a testimony as well!

Thursday morning we were at the chapel for a couple of hours in the family history center. There are a lot of community members that come to the chapel to do family history so the missionaries are there to meet people every week. I am actually really excited about this. I am becoming more and more interested in family history so it's cool to actually be in the family history center and help people, or try to help them at least!

Thursday afternoon we saw a girl who got baptized last year. She never had the new member lessons so we are teaching those to her and helping her to solidify her testimony. Thursday night we had Ward Council which was good. The ward is small so everyone is really looked after. Hopefully we can add some numbers to the ward too!

Friday we had a mission fast. The focus of the fast was 1) to be able to find families in our areas to teach and 2) to be prepared to receive revelation from Elder Hamula as he comes to the mission this week. He is doing 2 zone conferences on the mainland and one down here in Tassie. I am excited to hear from him! Friday was Anzac day (which is basically the equivalent of our Veteran's day) They have a memorial service in town here in Deloraine so we went down to the city center and tried to do some contacting in the morning. That evening before our dinner appointment, we had about 20 extra minutes. We decided to visit a member. We went to this sweet widowed sister's home. I am so grateful the spirit prompted us to go and see her. She had been having a rough week because her dear friend passed away. We were able to go and uplift her a little bit and she seemed so grateful! After that we had dinner with this really sweet Filipino lady in the ward. She has kidney failure and is having to do dialysis all the time but she doesn't complain at all. Instead she says, "I am grateful for my trials." It was incredible to see her faith. It made me think about my own life and how often I complain about little things.

Memorial in the city center
Saturday we spent a lot of the day visiting and trying to meet members of the ward which was good. We had dinner with the cutest little family.  At one of the member's that we visited, they gave us chocolate chip cookies. They tasted exactly like the ones from home! I haven't had that in a year so that was really nice!

Sunday at church was interesting. I have never been in such a small ward. There were only 71 people there. This ward really needs to grow. I know that there are people living here that are prepared to hear the gospel, we just need to find them!

Sunday afternoon we went tracting and we had a miracle. In a little less than two hours we got return appointments with 6 different people--three potential families to teach! It was amazing. Apparently that's better than they've had in Deloraine for a couple of transfers so it was awesome!

Tasmania is so beautiful. I love it here. Except it's already so cold. Seriously today it's 9 degrees C (48 degrees F). Welcome to winter. I'm pretty sure I'm as close to Antarctica as I will ever be! But, that's okay. We are going to have success this transfer. I just know it. And guess what?! It talks about Tassie in the Book of Mormon! 2 Nephi 10:20-21:

20 And now, my beloved brethren, seeing that our merciful God has given us so great knowledge concerning these things, let us remember him, and lay aside our sins, and not hang down our heads, for we are not cast off; nevertheless, we have been adriven out of the land of our inheritance; but we have been led to a bbetter  land, for the Lord has made the sea our cpath, and we are upon an disle of the sea.
21 But great are the promises of the Lord unto them who are upon the aisles of the sea; wherefore as it says isles, there must needs be more than this, and they are inhabited also by our brethren.

I love being a missionary. So much.

Love you all to Kolob and back!

Love,
Sister Baker

P.S. For mailing things, just send them to the mission office still. They just forward everything down here to us.

I'm going to the promised land... I'M GOING TO TASMANIA!!! - 4/21/14

Melbourne Mission Moments

What a crazy week it has been.

Monday for P-day we went bowling with our District which was really fun! Hahahaha, Asians are terrible at bowling. It was so hilarious. We have four Asians in our district and we were all just cracking up at them. We played two games. I didn't do so well the first one but the second game I bowled 131! Unfortunately Elder Brown beat me by 1 point. Bummer. Monday night we had FHE with L and her kids. We watched The Testaments with them. I had just finished reading 3 Nephi so it was cool to watch the movie and be able to visualize everything that I had just been reading about. They loved the movie!

Tuesday morning we had our district meeting. After district meeting we came back to the flat and Sister B was feeling really sick. For several days she had been getting these really bad optical headaches. She was in a lot of pain and couldn't even open her eyes because she is so sensitive to the light. She also felt really nauseous so she slept the rest of the day. It gave me a lot of time to read and I ended up finishing the Book of Mormon. I read it in 34 days and it was incredible. I learned so much and my love for the Book of Mormon has grown even more. As soon as I read Moroni 10, I knelt down next to the couch and prayed to know again of its truth. That assurance came once again. I know without a doubt that the Book of Mormon is true. I love it.

Wednesday morning Sister B was still feeling pretty bad so she slept in until we had to go to our appointments. We had a lesson with J and made plans for her baptism. She was so cute. She just kept saying how excited she was to get baptized. After that we had to go to the doctor. The doctor thought that Sister B had some sort of sinus problem going on so she gave her some antibiotics.

Sister C and Sister Baker
Thursday we went to the mission office to pick up Sister C. She has been serving in Tassie but she came up Wednesday night because the temple session for departing missionaries was Thursday morning (they can't go next week because the temple is closed). Instead of flying her back town to Tassie for just a couple of days, she has been spending a day in several areas. It was so fun to have her with us on Thursday. Sister B was still not feeling well so we left her at a member's house so she could rest and Sister C and I went out to work. We went to the train station to do some finding and it was really awesome! We met some really great people! We even found two potential families to teach! Sister C is such a good missionary! I am so grateful that I got to spend a day with her and learn from her! A cool experience we had, as we were leaving our dinner appointment that night, we had literally just started driving down the road when I saw a man walking his dog. It was dark so I couldn't see him very well but I felt a prompting that we needed to stop and talk to him. So I pulled the car to the side of the road and Sister C hopped out and started to talk to him. I turned off the car and joined her. As we talked to him we learned that he is from Italy. He hasn't been in Australia very long but he told us that he had met missionaries in Italy before. We were able to set up a return appointment to teach him and his girlfriend this week! I'm so glad that I followed the prompting to stop and talk to him!

Friday Sister B was still sick so we were inside most of the day.  Anyway, that night we went to see J to make final preparations for her baptism on Saturday. When we walked in, she was sitting with her foot propped up and crutches next to her. WHAT HAPPENED?! was the only thought I had. Haha she stepped into a pothole on Friday and had totally sprained her ankle. It looked the way that John Schouten's did the couple times that he has had bad sprains. But regardless she still wanted to get baptized.

J got baptized Saturday morning. Everything went perfectly. We had two priesthood holders in the water to help her get down the stairs and back up which was a little different but everything went perfectly. J was so happy. And so was L. It was so good to see their family completed--everyone baptized. Sunday J was confirmed and then D was given the priesthood which was awesome! I am so so grateful for this family. They have been a miracle for me. So grateful.

J's Baptism!
So grateful for this wonderful family!

So, Saturday night we got transfer news. They called and told us that Sister B would be staying and that I would be leaving. I wasn't too surprised. But then the Zone Leaders called and said, "Sister Baker, we have some more transfer news for you... You're going to the promised land!" I'M GOING TO TASMANIA!!! I'm so excited!! Ah! What an adventure it is going to be! I am so excited. I know that the coming transfer is going to be amazing. I will find out tomorrow who my companion is and then I fly down to Tas tomorrow night!

It is located 150 miles to the south of the Australian continent
directly below Melbourne. It is part of the Australian Melbourne Mission.
I love being a missionary. I love this work. I am so excited for Tassie!

Love y'all heaps!

P.S. - Easter in Australia is crazy. I feel like they do way less to celebrate than we do in America. People just give chocolate eggs and chocolate bunnies. But, they have like 4 days of holiday. Friday was a public holiday for Good Friday and literally it seemed like a ghost town. Everything was closed. Then they have Easter Saturday, Easter Sunday, and Easter Monday today so another public holiday

Phillip- I know what you mean about how terrible it is when you have to go and drop someone. Terrible. Crab Beach looks awesome. When do you have transfers again? Do you think you'll stay in your area much longer. If not, keeping working hard until the day you leave. Something I have tried to live by is "Leave your area better than you found it." I love you and pray for you! And yes, I would love to come to Peru so you can show me some dirt. Hahahaha or is it jajajajaja?

My knowledge of the gospel this week has truly lifted weight and given me wings. - 4/14/14

Melbourne Mission Moments 04/14/14

My heart is so full right now. Heavenly Father is so good to me. Prayers are heard and answered. The enabling power of the atonement is real. I have felt so lifted and enabled this past week. As you know, it's been rough for me lately. But as I have just completely turned everything over to my Heavenly Father, He has helped me. I've been able to turn to my Savior, knowing that He understands perfectly what I am experiencing and I've been enabled and strengthened.

Monday night after our P-day we went to see L and the kids. We talked to J about how she was feeling about baptism. She told us that she was feeling better after seeing the rest of her family get baptized but still wasn't so sure. I left feeling so helpless. I didn't know what to tell her or how to help her resolve her concerns. Before bed that night, I just poured out my heart to Heavenly Father. I told him how I just wanted to help J to get baptized like the rest of her family did. I told him how I just want to be able to help my companion. I told him how I felt weak and that I needed His help. I felt such an overwhelming calm come over me at that moment. I didn't have all the answers but I just felt that everything was going to be okay.

Tuesday morning I received an answer to my prayers. We had just gotten back from our morning exercise and Sister B had gotten into the shower. I was in the other room but I heard the phone ringing. I ran to answer it and it was J. She said, "I've been thinking about baptism and I was wondering if it would be alright for me to get baptized on April 19th?" I could hardly believe my ears! I wanted to cry and jump up and down and everything at the same time. The Holy Ghost had worked on her and helped her to have the confidence she needed! We've been helping her this week to make plans for her baptism and she is really excited! I am so glad she is going to get baptized before the transfer is over in case one of us is transferred so that both Sis. B and I can be here to share the day with her.

Tuesday afternoon we had Zone Interviews with President Maxwell. I am so grateful for him. He said all the things that I needed to hear while I was in my interview with him. He is such a gentle giant. After interviews were over we had dinner with a Filipino family in our ward. Sis. G made me love Filipinos so much!

Wednesday morning we had district meeting and it was really good. We talked about how we can make our studies in the morning the most effective. I am so grateful for the time we have every morning to study. I especially love personal study. It's a one-hour appointment with the Lord every single day where I can receive knowledge and revelation.

Wednesday afternoon we had a lesson with L and the kids about missionary work. They are really excited about it, L especially! It was awesome to see them light up as we helped them realize how much they can do. Recent converts are some of the best missionaries!

Wednesday night we went to contact a referral from our district leader. It is this cute young couple. Neither of them is very religious but they seem really prepared! Amanda even told us that one of her New Year resolutions for this year was to start going to church. We have another appointment with them this week so it should be good!

Thursday we went tracting and unfortunately it didn't prove very successful; however, we met this really cute retired couple who were working in their yard. We got to talk with them for a little bit and at least bear our testimonies even though they weren't interested in having us come back. Also, they had a pomegranate tree growing in their yard and they gave us some! They are so yummy!

Friday we went on exchanges with the Sister Training Leaders. I got to spend the whole day in our area with Sister H! It was so fun to be with her again. We work well together! And she is so fun and happy. We started the day with L and the kids to teach them about General Conference. Then we contacted a couple of referrals. Then we went tracting. In the pouring rain. It was just like old times in Churchill Park. At one point we just got the giggles because it was raining so hard and we were so wet. Our last appointment before we switched back was with B. I miss teaching with Sister H. Even though we were only together for one transfer, we really teach in unity. We taught B the Gospel of Jesus Christ and it went really well! At the end we were able to invite him to be baptized on May 17th and he accepted!

Friday night after I was back with Sister B we went with L to a ward RS dinner. The dinner was really fun. They had one table that was all decorated beautifully and then the other table was just bare, with a plastic bag full of paper plates and cups and plastic forks and spoons. As you arrived they assigned you to either one table or the other. At the end they explained that it was an analogy. The people on the nice table are those who had been visit taught and the ones on the other table were the ones who were forgotten. It was a good idea and a good night. L is loving making friends with people at church!

Saturday and Sunday we got to listen to General Conference! When we got to the chapel on Saturday, my package was there! Thank you so so much for the things you sent!! The shoes are perfect. I love the Easter countdown. We're going to use it with some members this week! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Ah, General Conference. I needed that. I feel like I have been spiritually feeding everyone else lately-- so it was so nice to just sit and be spiritually fed for the weekend. I felt like literally every talk had something just for me. Here's some of what I loved:

One thing I felt strongly through the whole conference was that things are just going to get worse. It's going to get harder and harder to be a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. I love Elder Holland's words about defending your faith. Elder Andersen said, "The world will not glide calmly toward the Second Coming." Elder Nelson talked of the need for us to let our faith show, and making sure that we are securely tied to God.

President Eyring- Righteousness cannot be forced, it must be chosen. If the blessings were immediate, choosing the right would not build faith. I also was touched by Elder Hales words about selective obedience.

Elder Scott's talk seemed to be just for me. One of the questions I had for Conference was how I can improve my teaching. His whole talk was perfect. One thing that I really felt strongly was the need to love those that I teach. I also liked that he talked about teaching with the vision of families being sealed in the temple. That is right in line with our mission focus right now.

Elder Cook's talk about family history and temple work. I have seen on the mission how I have changed and I am much more interested in this now. I can't wait to jump on the family history bandwagon when I get home!

The arrangement of "Let Us All Press On" that MoTab did on Sunday morning was beautiful!

President Uchtdorf! I needed this one. I need to focus on having an attitude of gratitude. I loved when he said, "Set aside the bottle of bitterness and lift the goblet of gratitude." Also about not forgetting to be grateful for the rain instead of just looking for the rainbow. I was also really struck when he said that gratitude is a catalyst to all of the Christ-like attributes.

I loved how Sister Stevens said "The Gospel is not weight, it is wings. It carries us." Also the quote from C.S. Lewis "I pray because I can't help it... it doesn't change God, it changes me." I have seen my prayers change so much since being a missionary. I literally can't help praying. I could never get in bed without praying first.

I think my favourite talk was Elder Bednar's. I've felt a real load lately and as I said earlier, the atonement has really blessed me to feel that load lightened this past week. I have taken the yoke of Christ upon me and things have been easier.

I could go on and on but I don't have time. Needless to say, I love General Conference! I can't wait to study the talks in the Ensign!

I am so grateful for my Heavenly Father and my Savior Jesus Christ. I couldn't do any of this without them. I love this gospel. I love being a missionary.

Love y'all heaps!
